For someone who has never EVER seen an anime...

Realistic; I'd go for Samurai Champloo...92% of the content could have actually happened.
It has action, is one long adventure, good comedic interludes, and intense fighting segments/based on actual/realistic fighting styles.

Semi-Realistic;Outlaw Star...take space combat to a whole new level. However characters are still human/mortal.
They have flaws, get the crap beaten out of them, and can be limited in skill due to how many bullets they have left in a gun.
Exaggerations include ridculous attacks from a 'Caster' gun which range from a double nuclear missle strike concentrated on a single point...
To a black hole the size of your fist removing a persons existence from the galaxy.
Gungrave The first anime that ever gripped me. (via PS game all in subtitles)
The ultimate story of friendship. Everyone is human until midway when they discover the process of necrolization (bringing the dead back to a semblance of life) and then superiorization (taking a human and converting them into something far beyond normal means) is implemented. Exaggerations include mindless bullet dancing (A lot of ammo being fired between reloads) monsters in the form of man, crystal-like humanoids, impossible firearms.

Over the top; *Shrugs* Mine typically stay down to earthish.
I don't really favor anything where a guy can annihilate the galaxy with a thought, but decides not to...
Or a sword that can cut god if he were to mainifest.
One Piece comes to mind...I thought the idea of a three blade wielding pirate was kinda cool...then I saw he held it in his mouth....while that is kinda unique and slightly intense...I see no practical use.
Or eating a random fruit and all the sudden you can detach and float your body parts about.
Being able to bounce cannonballs off yourself, etc.
Oh lets not forget the reindeer who can go incredible Hulk or make Doogie Houser crap himself.
Cruor Vult

Hope, it is the quintessential human delusion,
simultaneously the source of our greatest strength, and our greatest weakness.

Soon we shall be One...joined in the Word.

Well, it depends on your tastes...

The first anime I ever watched I believe was... actually I'm not too sure, but I'm pretty sure it included stuff like Escaflowne, Card Captor Sakura, among others.. but those two stick out more.

Anyway, for Romantic Comedy.. turn to (in my mind) the greatest anime/manga evar, Oh My Goddess! (It might also be spelled Ah! My Goddess!), for your regular action/violence/omfgpwn kinda thing, see Naruto and Bleach.. One Piece is alright, and Fullmetal Alchemist is worth a mention.

Oh yeah, you might want to look up Chobits and Ai Yori Aoshi... I've heard they're quite good.

People's tastes are very different. But on the average, people tend to sway towards Naruto or Bleach
As for me, I liked multiple forms of anime. You can try and check out this forum. Be warned, there are alot of animetards in there. Some people in there are good people though.

The first anime I ever really watched (I did watch a few episodes of Inuyasha before hand but they don't count because I wasn't really watching ^_^) was Fooly Cooly. It was so friggen insane and quirky and cute that I just couldn't keep my eyes off it! The whole anime is like a giant joke, but with some obscure anime-like storyline shoved in between. I mean, a few minutes into the first episode it shows a scene of the characters sitting in a bus talking about how hard it was to act out the last slow motion effect without breathing. Its simply insane. No other words to describe it. I would definitely advise you check it out. If I hadn't origionally watched it in an English dub I would advise you to stay as far away from Enlish as possible and simply read the subtitles, but I really think the english voice actors fit the characters better ^_^
Good luck on finding something you like

Ruroni Kenshin
I was a fan of that too.
But past that I kinda didnt watch anime again >_>
I watched some of DBZGT...maybe 5 episodes...but that was it.
I started with Gundam, some Big-O, some other show (i want to say it started with a 'T', it was on toonami)
(probably woulda stayed with Gundam if they didnt kill it with that one weird small retarded midget gundam part, haha :o)
But anyway, I had only watched Toonami stuff stuff until Kenshin ended. I tryed to watch some other shows on Adult Swim, which was after toonami (when it got moved to saturdays) but i got lost in the crazyness of not knowing the storyline at all.
Pheh, just my two cents.
I do like animes though, just not very knowing of them.

First anime I ever saw, which remains my favorite to this day is Guyver. And Gungrave is a close second.

My first real anime in japanese with subs was Full Metal Alchemist, probably one of the best animes aviable.
For starters there are the endless Animes like One Piece Naruto and Bleach.
Pirates Ninjas or Swordfighter^^

School Rumble, Excel Saga, Love Hina... ahh there so many classic ones.
Ofcourse Kenshin, Cowboy Beebop or a real good that just runned Claymore. Ahh geez there to many people need to specify their likes^^

Third thread revival already, sheesh.
The older one, that's what real animes fans start with.
