If you select rikter at the beginning of the game before choosing him and use edge of desolation, then select him, the first unit he gets too close to is crippled.
And you CAN use edge of desolation before choosing. just try it.

Also I have a question about that ability. Even though SPELL_CAST and SPELL_EFFECT fire at the same time, can you still reference SPELL_EFFECT?
