Did you also know that in anime shows, katana can cut through entire buildings, bridges, and many-feet thick structural steel? I'll have you know that your little anime animation showing a broadsword as being just a hunk of steel is completely bogus.
He was obviously joking, would anyone here remotely think that a cartoon's rendition, let alone stupid anime, would be accurate of a katana rending a piece of scrap metal apart? please

With Ves, I always have to wonder. His posts are so serious, it's incredibly difficult to imagine him joking about anything.

I do recall early Hawaiian 'swords' being heavy bludgeons studded with shark teeth.

While I really hate that show, deadliest warriors showed maori warriors using those, too. I really wonder how effective those would be, since anything tied with rope generally isn't too good for more than very few blows. And if I had to chose between steel and sharp teeth? well, I mean, they didn't have choice I suppose. And I guess that shark teeth were the sharpest thing available to them
The urumi or Surul Pattai (Tamil) is a long sword made of flexible steel, sharp enough to cut into flesh, but flexible enough to be rolled into a tight coil.
That is sweet, I certainly see potential into a hero using some sword-whip thing that could pull stuff to him and inflict all sort of nasty things like maim or bleed or whatever

Against natural flesh I would suspect the impact damage then a quick yank from a Shark Tooth sword would be effective.

well, yes, but you could say that out of many other things, such as broken glass or even, solid plastic. I think the shark tooth were more of a symbolic thing, though as I said, shark teeth were probably the only sharp thing available to them at the point

Sharks were somewhat symbolic to the Maori culture since they do have cultural patterns based on it. So I wouldn't be surprised if they did use Shark teeth.

And about the katana vs sword thing, they are both suited towards different types of styles to fight.

I see your carrot blade and raise you an Axe Gun!

But back to the original topic:
vesuvan wrote:You will never see Wizards of the coast adapt to actual facts, so katanas were actually dropped from fourth edition. You know how it is, they have to sell to the lowest common denominator. It just goes to show that westerners are not ready to let go of their myth of the deadly knight and katanas are just too embarrassing.
Comparing katanas to polearms is like comparing apples to oranges. A polearm, namely halberds and glaives, are meant more as a crushing weapon than a slicing one; it's designed to knock a passing rider off of his horse and then stab with the sharp end of the weapon. They didn't really need to be able to slice, they just had to be heavy enough to bring down a knight.

And besides, if you're so pissed that Wizards removed the katana, then just home-rule it, it's not a huge deal.
