Wolfram Alpha

Post by Hydrolisk » Sat May 16, 2009 2:55 pm

http://www.wolframalpha.com/

Wolfram|Alpha is a computational knowledge database... thing.
It functions somewhat like Google, but is focused on statistics and doing stuff with statistics. E.g. if I typed in "France", it might come up with landmass under control of France, population, GDP, etc.

Anyway, check it out if you have the time. It already exploded FireFox a few times though and the site seems to be going fairly slow, so making time later on in the week would be a good idea.

The minimum apparant IQ of every person on the internet rises another twenty points.

There was a day when if somebody had the relevant vocabulary that they actually had relevant knowledge. Thanks to wikipedia, that day is gone. It's gotten so bad that if you whiff a single technical term, even after correcting yourself, people will assume you are too stupid to work wikipedia.

I don't even want to imagine the effect Wolfram Alpha will have on this phenomenon. Even the tiniest abuses of notation, even when in context that greatly simplifies a subject, will be met with the screams of a million mouth breathers who will copy and paste it into wolfram and see if they have an excuse to insult somebody.

Hmm, only thing is that the site name is a little hard to remember. Google is easy, Wolfram Alpha is hard. :( :(

When it's no longer alpha, it will probably change. And if you'd read the 'about' tab, you'd know, that's it's supposed to become a product, with "corporate" and other version for which you'll have to pay. It's the Wolfram Research company, after all, not charity, GNU Wikipedia.
