Neil Gaiman

Post by TheIrishPatriot » Sat Jan 19, 2008 1:25 pm

I read Neverwhere recently, and now I'm a huge fan. My brother's wife (who got me Neverwhere for Christmas) says to go onto American Gods, and then Anansi Boys. I know I've seen Mr. Gaiman's name somewhere in the favorite author thread, what are your thoughts on him?

Oh, and the marquis was my favorite character.

I've heard a lot about him, but I've never read any of his works. I still have lots and lots of Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, Michael Crighton, and Ayn Rand books to read before I can move on. :P

I think the name's familiar, but I've never read any of his stuff.

Send them to their violent graves, don't spare anyone
Dead and wounded lie all around, see the pain in their eyes
Over the field an eerie sound, as we hear the raven's cry

Mr. Gaiman is definitly bad-ass.

If you haven't already, go find the Sandman chronicles at your library and read ALL of them.

Changed my life(well not really but they kick ass)

And Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandamar > silly Marquis anyday. lol

Also, read Good Omens it was written by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett so its good. It takes a nice hilarious twist on the apocalypse, let me give you the back cover.

According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Whitch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner. So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan, Except a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon - both of whom have lived amongst Earth's mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle - are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. Andsomeone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist...

Hmm, I wonder. Can we get a Book section of the forums? That way I can totally avoid all these book-related threads.... Err, I mean, so that I can get all my amazing book idea's in one place!

Post in forum suggestions, so we can debate without derailing?

Oh, and Loki, I'd say Neverwhere because it's fun (yes, fun), has good minor characters, a delightful world, and good humor. It's a "Dark Alice in Wonderland". If you like that, go with that. If you want to try a parody/comedy thing, go for Good Omens. I don't know what American Gods is like, but it should be read before Anansi Boys.

I second Good Omens, but respectfully add that Pratchett beats this guys face off. Try reading Mort, Hogfather, and/or Small Gods for starters. Some good ones that don't require the Discworld backstory (there's an order, but it doesn't really matter.)

Ok, I havent read this, and I've just scanned the thread, but I will definately vouch for Terry Pratchett being awesome. Jingo was my personal favourite, but I geuss it wouldnt be too amazing as a first Discworld book. I found The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic quite nice too.
