Yarin

Post by VZhitogoroshi » Mon Sep 01, 2008 11:54 am

The evacuation was already underway, but there was no panic in the city. This evac plan had been practiced before, and if someone was out of touch they needed only to look for the nearest blue head to get a refresher course. Calmly, Yarin moved underground.

... A man burst through the classroom door.

The kids screamed and Mosh turned his back to the board, observing the intruder.
"Can I help you... uhmm"

"Defense Squad. We've got orders to evacuate all of Yarin."

"Do you mind if I talk to you in a minute?" Mosh went over to the side of the room and picked up a pokeball.
"Come on out Phalanx!" He hefted the ball into the middle of the room and started grouping the kids together.
"Kids, follow Phalanx outside, I'll be with you momentarily." They left so orderly, Mosh had to fight back a proud grin. Shutting the door he once again turned his attention to the SDS man.
"So we're to evacuate immediately huh? How am I supposed to get these children to their parents? Where are we going, will there be escorts?"

"You're to evacuate as soon as possible. As for where you're going, follow the other citizens, we're planning on meeting up with professional trainers. The kids. I could send for somebody to escort your group, unless... Do you think you're capable of protecting them yourself? We're a bit short on people."
He looked kind of guilty, as though the situation was worse than it appeared.

"Oh, I'm capable." Mosh gathered his remaining 5 pokeballs and rejoined his class.
"Well class it seems we'll be going on a bit of a field trip today!" With him and front and Phalanx covering their rear they followed some other refugees up ahead. Mosh had never been so worried, but he managed to hold a smile and hum a bit.
"For the kids." He told himself.
Your move.

It took a while for him to find his way out of the complex. Seperate from the rest of the group, he had ventured to one of the outskirt neighborhoods, where he knew 'his' people would be waiting...

A voice rings out, from around the corner: "Hey, I told you before, I'm not leaving my house!"
Ah. Home...

About ten trainers were trying to convince nearly a hundred people of their imminent danger. Standing eye-to-eye, it looked like a riot could start at any moment, and a fair number of the civilians had a pokemon or two on their belt or by their legs. A meowth here, a growlith there, none of them particularly dangerous... But enough of them could still cause chaos. Heads turned as Ben approached, and... "Sir, please, inform these... Men," The man almost spat out the word, "that we won't be leaving our houses, not again." The trainers turned, as a group, and began to look panicked.

Ben smiles, "Ok, so, what's the problem? You'll be coming back to them, won't they?" He asks, turning towards the men in uniform. "Of course, we just need to get them out of the danger---" One of the men cuts in, "Sure, they couldn't stop us coming back, but what of our houses, what of our things? We don't want those damn traitorous Pokemon coming in and breaking our houses and our things." Arguing breaks out again, and the trainers start to finger their pokeballs, as the crowd starts grabbing makeshift clubs.

"People, people, people... Your belongings will be safe. The stuff that is truly precious, grab what you can carry, we'll be glad to guard you as you take them, won't we?" Ben commands the trainers, glaring at them. Given no real option, they assent, and the crowd disperses into their homes, swearing and rushed yelling making a large part of the din, as families argue about what to bring.

Ben sighs, and pulls out a Pokeball. "I'd rather not use you... But I guess you're our best option here. No one else can hit them quite as effectively..." The pokeball remains in his hand, ready to be thrown when needed.

High up in the skies just south of Yarin, perched upon Starwort’s back was Matt. He was in a sorry state; his clothes weatherworn and torn in places, and his body bearing visible marks of injuries. His right hand rested lightly on his dangling legs, but his left was limp and bloodied, hanging by his side. His head drooped lower and lower as they flew, exhaustion threatening to overpower him – suddenly, with no apparent reason he jerked upright, his eyes bright and alert.

“A city? Are you sure?” He said aloud to Starwort, whose head had swiveled around to stare at him meaningfully. Matt leaned forward slightly and attempted to establish a firmer grip with both hands. He winced. He kept forgetting. His left arm still hung uselessly at his side. He had learned to block out the constant pulsing pain already, but it still shocked him when he was unprepared.

“Slowly… slowly, please,” he gasped as they began a rapid descent. The Salemence snorted at him and then turned away.

The city, unlike the other smaller settlements they had come across during their journey inland, was a flurry of activity. Something big was happening here, he thought, and he walked around almost cautiously, taking in the situation. He passed by a schoolhouse with children filing out in an orderly fashion. An evacuation? A whole city?

“Excuse me…” he began half-heartedly to a nearby, official-looking man in blue. But the man barely heard him with all the noise around them, hurrying past without so much as a glance.

“Darn it.” Matt muttered to himself angrily, looking around for another person, his arm was aching again; he couldn’t hold back the pain forever.

Spurred on by his discomfort and weariness, he stepped forward to confront one of the men helping to herd the children, a teacher most likely. “Sorry, but could you tell me what’s going on here?”

Startled by a voice among shouts Mosh's group stopped and look towards the source.

“Sorry, but could you tell me what’s going on here?”

"I don't know much more than you do, a man comes to my room in the morning and tells me that everyone's to evacuate the city.

Mosh broke away from his kids and walked up to the stranger.

"I'm a teacher around here, I don't know if I'll be able to be a teacher anymore. My name is Mosh, what's yours?"

While Mosh waited for an answer he eyed the man's waist.

"Say... You wouldn't happen to be a trainer would you? I wouldn't usually ask this of you but I do have my class under my protection, would you mind coming with us? I'd like to be prepared for whatever is happening."
Your move.

“I- I am a trainer- yes, of course, I’ll help out in any way I can,” Matt replied, quickly recovering from his surprise at this sudden request. “Hold on…”

“Starwort,” he said in a low voice, turning to address his silent companion. “You’ll have to get in your Pokeball for a while - I’m sorry, but I don’t know what’s going on out there and I don’t want you to be off on your own…”

Starwort glared at him, baring his fangs and flapping his wings agitatedly.

Matt groaned and tried again, “Please Starwort, just for a little while – I promise.”

Starwort shut his mouth and submitted, but not graciously.

“Now…” Matt muttered to himself, fumbling with two other Pokeballs at his side. Morphia and Bolt phased into existence beside him. Bolt began stretching his front legs lazily; yawning and rustling his spikes as he did, and Morphia settled herself around his legs in a serene manner.

“Morphia, Bolt.” He acknowledged them seriously. “Something bad is going on in the city, we’re going to help escort these children to the evacuation site, wherever that may be.”

Morphia nodded faintly and Bolt straightened, giving a strange high pitched yowl to show that he understood the gravity of the situation.

Satisfied, Matt spoke to the teacher, wincing only imperceptibly at a slight twinge of pain from his left arm, “We’re ready. Shall we start moving?”

Kota had been waiting behind Ben as he spoke - it seemed lurking was his specialty. After the tension had passed, he clapped to announce his presence. "Well done, sir, well done. I guess it's good we didn't waste you going off to Jin." He gestures toward the other houses. "Mind if I recruit you to help spread the word faster? The sooner we finish evac, the sooner we can send up a flare and the SDS can stop trying to bait the avian cloud. Lives are kinda at stake with that task."

Services District

A gun chilled the back of Matt's neck. Mosh, despite having been facing the man, would have seen the attacker for no more than two seconds before it was too late. She wore the standard Yarin Corps. uniform with the standard blue hair, but also sported a matching cape. Of course, Matt wouldn't know the identity of the wielder.

"This is restricted airspace, and you flew into town without so much as checking in. And now you're with the kids, and have two pokemon out - completely against evac policy. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse - ignorant people don't go through avian cloiuds. Down on your knees, hands up holding the pokeballs."

Ben jumps slightly, and turns around quickly, obviously surprised to be caught unawares. "I suppose I'll help any way I can, but I'm not sure if those other than my people will actually listen to me. And I've got to at least wait until they get their things, I can't leave my people without suitable protection." He comments somewhat snidely, as if he's convinced the security groups can't do nearly as much to protect his people.

Matt grimaced, shocked momentarily at the touch of cold metal, but that didn’t bother him nearly as much as the cool menace that emanated from the woman. She was obviously a person who knew what she was doing and was good at what she did.

Bolt raised his hackles and hissed at the woman and Morphia bared her fangs and glared, but both remained unmoving at a mental warning from Matt. He could presumably take out the woman behind him. Morphia was here, augmenting his power with her own, and she would be taken unawares, but really, what would that accomplish? It would only serve to bring the entire city’s wrath down upon him.

The woman didn’t sound like someone you could reason with easily either, but nevertheless, he had to try.

“I’m sorry for the offense, but I am a foreigner, here only by chance, and unfamiliar with your laws. We came from the southern coast, tracing the river’s path for the most part, and we saw no avians. We were only hoping for a brief refuge when we landed here, we mean you no harm.” He spoke stiffly but politely. When he had finished, he wondered vaguely whether he could have said any more. He was sure an offer of assistance would only be disdained, and inquiring about the “children” remark was probably unwise as well – though what did they suppose he would do, kidnap them?

Kota shrugged. It seems Ben was going to be fairly obstinate and a evac offered no time to argue. "Whatever you like, I guess." He gestured toward a nearby row of houses. "That complex is only a year old. Those people have been briefed on evac policy but they've never done one. Total newbies." He tossed Ben a small, worn blue book. "Read these policies word for word and they'll recognize them." He walked off without waiting for a response. Either Ben would do it, and he'd come back to see it done, or he wouldn't, and he'd come back and do it himself.

Her voice was skeptical. "You came from Yarin's south? Pray tell, what business could possibly bring you there?" But while her words are hard, the gun seems to relax.

Yarin. So that was where he was. He did arrive in Karud, not in the right place perhaps, but still.
It looked like he might be able to get out of this situation also; he noted a subtle change in the woman’s aura.

He responded to the question carefully, “I was on board a ship headed towards Eoyin. It sank, I guess, in the sea southeast of this city. My Pokemon brought me to land. It was an accident, like I said.”

Ben took the booklet, and began to quickly scan through it, make sure he remembered it well. Nothing had changed since he memorized it last, so he tossed it in a trashbin nearby. The trainers were helping his people well enough, and it shouldn't take too long to help the idiots in the new area, right...?

Oops, wrong. The people in the complex not only had no idea what they were doing, they seemed to have split into two factions about what they were supposed to do, and had appointed two people to argue it out. Accompanied by various not at all helpful comments from the crouds in the form of yelling things such as "Yeah!" and "That's right!". No one even noticed Ben when he arrived. Until a loud buzzing noise filled the air, startling the croud into noticing the man with gusts of wind circling him. As he stops talking, a Ninjask appears out of thin air on his head.

"Now, 'yall been a bit hectic. 'yall be a bit scared. Not knowin' quite what to do, right? Mixed up, a bit? See the people over there?" He asks, pointing to his neighborhood, "They're doing what they should be. Grabbin' what they need, leavin' what they don't, and bein' right quick about it all, too. I reckomen' 'yall do the same thing too. I gots this little booklet here I supposed to read out of, but I figure 'yall know the rules. When you've grabbed what it is ya want, march over here to my area, we can go down together."

Main Housing Complex

Just as relative calm had been restored, another civilian burst out in a panic. "Pokes! Pokes are attacking!"

The crowd churns as he continues. "I didn't see em - they must have been short. They killed Marty! Little bastards, whatever they were, dragged him down, he screamed - bam, nothing." His eyes are bulging in panic. "We have to leave! We have to leave now!"

Services District

Matt would be able to hear the footsteps behind him - the gunwielder had been stealthy, but this new arrival was not. "Felix! There's an P1 in HA2."

The gun came away. "Evac these people." Without a word, Felix ran off in the direction the SDS member had came from.

He smiled. "Ho there. Names Tarren. Now, something exceedingly bad has happened, and we have to hurry underground. Kay?"

...Oh damn. "Isabelle, quickly go scout around where that man came from, then come back and tell me about what we're dealing with." Ben's Ninjask couldn't talk, but she could tell numbers, and faster than the eye could notice Isabelle was gone. Ben was looking around, fingering a different Pokeball.

"Ok, folks, lets get out of here. If you trample each other, we'll have more dead, not less. Long as you stay out in the open where the Trainers can protect you, you should be fine. March, nice and orderly like."

"Nothing for it..."
Kashim wiped his brow and glanced skyward. So far neither the girl nor the birds staying on the horizon had approached in the passing time, but he doubted the situation would be so stalemate for much longer. On the plus, his troops were slightly rested and ready for the next venture into the wild. On the down, his truck was being fidgety and his back was really starting to ache after all the work he had to do clearing the intake of bird guts. He stretched and took a piece of something done well from Grimm. It was probably avian, but it all tasted the same after Pyre was done with it.

The Marowak had most of his armor off, reworking a loose band of leather and bone into a strong defensive piece once more.
His helm, as always, was fastened tight to his head as per custom with the species. The creature was silent, not a single growl or grumble interrupting it's work, perhaps brooding on the next chance to show its prowess in battle. Kashim took a bite of meat and tried to decide what his best Plan of Action was. On the one side, Keo was maybe five days drive if he took it light. On the other, he could raid whatever Yarins people were leaving for the ferals and maybe find something to spruce up his rigged truck before making his way to Keo. A puff of smoke haloing about him followed her deceptive voice in his ear.

"You're going back aren't you?"
He took another bite and simply nodded his head.
When he spoke it was almost like a weight placed itself on his shoulders.
"It's the best course...I need you in top condition...not tired because you had to carry a troop truck around because it wouldn't run."
A sound, maybe a chuckle, maybe a stifled one, escaped her throat.
"Lead on, I will follow."
"As will I." came the gravely tone of Grimm as he fitted his armor on once more and picked up his bone spike.
Kashim nodded to them both and thumbed for Grimm to hop in the back. He took one of the six balls hooked to his belt off and held it out in question. Pyre shook her head in decline and took to the air once more. Shrugging, Kashim clasped the ball back to his belt, hoped in the truck and cranked the thing to life.

It turned over with a grinding noise that spoke of half-commitment and found purchase in the ground.
Kashim turned the wheel toward Yarin and silently hoped everyone would be far away from him by now.
