The Killzone

Here aspiring creators can lay down some basic ideas of what they are going to do before submitting a finalized form for the viewing public. A good place to get some help from your fellows.

From the disc labeled "Crisis History". A woman with a pretty voice begins to speak, but her words are lost in the static. The area around her is clearly a military base.

*PZZSSSTTZZTTT*

...The Killzone, named by a clever military journalist shortly after the massive outbreak of zombies, is the region formerly known as Eastern Europe, spreading from the Baltic all the way down to the Greek Isles. The major cities and countries have mostly been wiped out, with the exception of six: Corinth, Athens, Thebes, Krakow (the rest of Poland was grabbed by Russia, but Krakow declared its independence and is now the Independent Kingdom of Krakow, led by his soveriegn, Peter I of Krakow), Budapest and its surrounding fields, and Istanbul, along with most of Turkey.

After the outbreak, communication broke down. The most eastern countries of the Killzone were annexed by Russia, despite the initial complaints of the Western world. As the Killzone spread farther west, communication with Russia was lost completely. Sattelites reveal that Russia and the lands it has claimed are overrun with zombies. No request for aid has been issued, so no help has been sent.

Western Europe is still alive, yet the countries of Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic are under quarantine. Outbreaks of the disease occur daily in the major cities and those countries are under martial law. France and Great Britain have sent their soldiers into these countries to help prevent the spread of the disease and it has been working, for the time being. Spain and Portugal have shut down all entrances into their countries early before the major outbreak and the last communication sent, shortly after the outbreak, left the rest of the world with the impression that the iberian pennisula was fine with no outbreaks. That was right before the Spanish air force bombed the straits of Gibralter. Their planes have been flying above the territory since then.

Africa has long since suffered from this plague, though the rest of the world turned a blind eye and claimed it to be tribal conflict. South Africa and Namibia are the only two countries with any resemblence to civilization left in the south. The Northern coastline still remains, but in between the two poles lies sheer chaos. The only working airport in the entire country is the Greater North American airport, defended by the soldiers of the GNA army, located in the depths of the Congo. It houses the largest and best supplied hospital in Africa, and yet it still is unable to stop this epidemic. Madagascar is the only country that has been 100% unaffected.

China, like Russia, used the chaos as an oppurtunity to expand, creating the Zho Empire, encompassing all of the southeastern mainland. Japan shut down their borders and closed all ports and airports to foreign ships. No cases of outbreak have been reported, and all seems well on the island nation. The Middle East has been quiet in terms of zombie outbreak. Israel and Jordan, in a joint project, protected their countries early on, building a wall around the two countries. With the outbreak, peace in the Middle East has finally been reached, except the region has faced an economic collapse as the rest of the world pulled its funding.

South America has been unaffected having closed their borders with Mexico early on. All Central Americans were relocated into the Rainforest Development, slums built on the recently demolished rain forest. The South American Confederation still maintains communication with the rest of the world, but their refusal to take in refuges infuriates the other countries.

In the Arctic Circle, there is a fortress made of steel and ice created for the sole purpose of research. All the countries that still belong to the United Federation, the child of the former United Nations, have sent their best scientists and soldiers to this castle. It is under consant threat, but so far, it has been secure. Recent reports have shown, however, that the outbreaks near Castle are becoming more frequent and larger.

That simply leaves the Greater North America. Canada and the United States have officially become one, combining all the resources and manpower. The new capital, located in the metropolis of St. Paul-Minneapolis, is heavily defended. The former West Coast has all but been destroyed up to the Rockies, and the East Coast has reported quite a few outbreaks, but is still an active part of the greater country. Mexico has been quarantined. No one leaves and no one gets in.

No one leaves and no one gets in...As though the world is any different...

The Killzone is reporting signs of activity. Be ready to mobilize, gentlemen.

Updates concerning various things in The Killzone will be posted here periodically, including Characters (as soon as we get them all in) and other misc. things.

Let's get that combat system in. Would be interesting to have a RP that's more of a realistic game. Hunger, thirst, heat, things like that too.

A combat system is completely lame and restricts those who want to RP the way they want to RP.
If you take that away, what's the point?

I don't mean anything strict, just a total tally of supplies, weapon status, general state of well-being, injuries, sleep deprivation, blood loss, things like that. Not like a percents and numbers D&D system.
Can you hear them?

It would still be a system, albeit rules-light. Not every system has to be monolithic.

First of all, real life is lame and restrictive. If a person has their leg bitten by a zombie, there is a deterministic time they will survive without treatment. If somebody attempts to jump, the system of real life determines how far they will go.

However, there is nothing truly lame or restrictive about real life from other points of view. You may be limited to time and space, but since you know nothing outside of it, why should you even care? I won't even bother attempting to enumerate the possible options of real life, but to say it's lame in any way because it has physics is pure sophistry. To put this in another perspective, every single setting with a proper continuity has a sort of system, the same way a game is coded so that mario jumps at a certain height, or that Harry Potter summons magic with a certain word.

If you have ever played a tabletop RPG anyway, you understand that the rules serve only two purposes.
1. relieve the GM of menial decision-making (how long does it take to sever a zombie head with a kitchen knife?)
2. Create a common interface between the GM and the players.

They are not shackles or limitations, they are references that facilitate a better roleplaying experience. There has no been a single copy of even the Dungeon Master's Guide that does not make this explicit. Check page 174 in the DMG for fourth edition, and almost every other well-made system has a similar clause.

Fantasy blended with truth. And if you need more explanations, cover it up with "nanites". :D

This is a notice for those who want to get into The Killzone: Bush and I have settled on an ultimatum date 4 days from now, which would be this Saturday. Either get in a character by then, or be left in the dust. If you need an extension, ask and it shall be given, but we need to get the ball rolling on this. We need to communicate with you all, and we can't do that if you don't put something up.

Ist thou craven, that you have not even deigned to ask a bequethal of more time?

Come, and test thy mettle in the Killzone. All this humble servant asks is a posting of intent to join those valorous souls lost to us in the depths of the Killzone, nothing more.

In other words, just post whether or not your even thinking of joining. Or at least request more time.

Registration closed (for now). Opportunities to join will present themselves later, though you will most likely have some drawbacks, not starting from the inside of a well-supplied military base and all. Continuing post will come tomorrow.

This actually works out better since I'm doing someone who shouldn't be near the Killzone.

Great, two soldiers. Some more combat heavy characters?
