Re: On the Topic of Homosexuality
Vesu, your in-your-face atheist attitude is what annoyed me. I agree with you that the Bible has no place in judicial and legislative decisions, but this isn't the topic for it. Also, I was seriously annoyed for what I presumed was modern liberal antisemitism with Jews and Israel being always wrong ...

Re: Show, Don't Tell
no, I'm honest in saying showing is always better than telling, by which I mean any scene shown is better than told. However, the story itself can suffer from the drawn out tales. Which is why for instance, walking scenes that would take days usually only delve into a few key dialogs or character gr...

Re: On the Topic of Homosexuality
I'm Jewish...and just to answer vesu's... A religious man lives in a tall two story house. One day, it begins to rain heavily and everything starts to flood. At the very first moments of the flood, the man is standing on his porch. A man with a bicycle rides up. "Come with me, the city's flooding an...

Re: Abortion
If you're just careless and don't protect yourself during sex, that's your fault. If you practice "safe sex" and it just happens to be that percent chance that the condom doesn't work, then you should be allowed an abortion even if it won't threaten your health. However, abortion should NOT be used ...

Re: Show, Don't Tell
The problem is when telling skips over the essential part to make the characters appear real. Also, you should "tell" very sparingly, showing is actually always better. It lets the reader draw his/her own opinion of the character/event, instead of having an opinion shoved in their face.

Re: On the Topic of Homosexuality
The old testament isn't the only place. Romans, Corinthians, it's reaffirmed that God doesn't like this stuff. Do you think that maybe, just maybe, there was actually a good reason why we picked some books and not others? Apparently not. Maybe you would like to explain to us why Leviticus should be...

Re: On the Topic of Homosexuality
Irish, the main problem I have with you using the Old Testament isn't even the fact that it's mixing religion and state. It's hypocritical! Christianity basically threw out the Old Testament with Paul. Do you keep kosher? Do you celebrate the holidays of the old testament? Do you follow "an eye for ...

Re: Eragon
do you want to know what is worse than Eragon? The ultimate unauthorized guide to Eragon. For a woman who claims to be a science fiction author...she's horrible. Here are some quotes of hers. In the second novel, Eragon becomes far more elflike and this is useful, given that he's falling in love wit...

Vesu, I'd love to continue this conversation, but that's not what this threads about. Maybe in some other topic.

Re: On the Topic of Homosexuality
I think you've all missed the point of that line besides legend. The reason it is forbidden isn't because God hate's it. That's not what the hebrew to-evah means. Abhorrence in this case isn't hate. The reason homosexuality is abhorrent is because, like legend says, the Canani'im (or Cannanites) and...

Re: Eragon
Irish clarified my point nicely, Echo. Necessity doesn't mean "Oh I need to have a main character and his friends." Necessity is just using them to advance the plot despite never having been introduced before (Generally by using them as a deus ex machina in the process). Because this is an Eragon th...

Re: Eragon
Out of necessity? If you do that your characters will be every bit as dry and unemotional as the cast of Eragon. You should not insert yourself into your characters, but you should let your characters tell you what will happen. You need to be able to place yourself into the situation and imagine how...

just showing the text. I'm taking that as a yes. Ch is gutterel, so don't pronounce it like you would char. V'et zah-char lo teesh-cav meesh-cvay eeshah to-evah he. And do not lie (sleep) with a male the way you would with a woman, it is an abhorrence. Now...onto my opinion. Why does the bible quote...

Re: Abortion
Why does it matter to anybody but the woman? Who honestly cares what she does with her body? Why do any of us have a right to tell her that one life is more important then the other? If the baby will ruin the mother's life, through no fault of her own (I mean that she practiced safe sex, she made th...

Re: On the Topic of Homosexuality
If you want...I can get you the original hebrew that that line is translated from. Also, I would like to point out that it is physically impossible for a man to lie with a man the way he can with a woman (and by that...I mean standard sexual intercourse.)
